Glossary - Theism

Theism is the religious (more common) or non-religious belief in the existence of deities and/or supernatural agents, particularly in the context of influencing or intervening in reality to sustain a personal relationship with, or maintain control over, the living.

In most forms of theism at least one deity is credited for the creation of the universe.  It is fairly common for theologies to emphasize exclusivity with with regard to rejecting deities from other religions.

Subclassifications include monotheism, which is the belief in a single deity; and polytheism, which is the belief in two or more deities.  A further sub-classification of polytheism includes henotheism, in which there is an adherence to a single deity while also believing in other deities (or at least not denying their existing).
