Deism is the belief that the universe was created supernaturally by a supreme deity (or group of deities) and then abandoned.  Deists are sometimes regarded as pessimistic theists who reverted to atheism.

Deism is sometimes confused with atheism, yet it is distinctly different from atheism because it contends that one or more creator deities did exist in the past, and doesn't specifically rule out the possibility that such a deity could return in the future.
